Borough Finance. At its monthly meeting held 011 Monday the -Boi*>ugh Council passed for payment accounts totalling £1315 7s lid., The general account shows a debit balance 0/ £4158 6s 8d and the Electricity a ciedit of £604 9s. Whakatane Public Library. At the monthly meeting of the Librarj-- Committee the above books were selected: The Voyage. Chas Mod'gan; Mrs Tim, D. E. Stevenson; They Were Defeated, R. Macaulay; A, Ring at the Door, G. Sava; Four Fingers, Lynn Brock: The Corinthian, G. Heyer: One Mian's Year, B. Newman; The Shetland Plan. Taffrail; Sowing Glory, P. G. Wren. Hall Change-over. The Caledonian Society which Avill take over the King Street Hall before the end of the week has already set up a special sub-commit-tce for the purpose of arranging for plans and renovations. Until the improvements are effected there will be little or no variation of the present schedule of charges. A taker however will be appointed as soon as possible and every care will be* taken to ensure that the building is swept and clean in readiness for all organisations making use of it.
Prisoner of War. Private Alfred Atkinson, previously reported missing in Greece, is now known to be a prisoner of war In Germany. Bad Weather for Fruit Trees. Stormy weather during the past few days must have taken a toll of blossom on the plum trees of this district. Most trees were a mass of white blossom last week, and it is a pity that sunny days did not' continue until the flowers had changed into tinjr fruit. Daffodils in Profusion. There is no reason why the forthcoming Spring Flower Show in the Parish Hall should not be a record. Everywhere in the borough one is met by the pleasant prospect of gardens in full bloom. Bulbs appear to be in greater abundance than ever and some of the displays rre. a definite credit to those responsible. Accounts Written Otf\ Recently the Boroujth Council reviewed sundry deotoi accounts in nil departments, including rates and the following outstanding amounts were written off: Cemetery, £'2: Electricity consumers, £26 10s 7d: European rates, £58 4s 7cl* .Maori, rates, £281 14s Id. Commenting on the decision the Mayor stated thai it would be generally agreed that the amounts were very small.
