PORTUGAL
COSMOPOLITAN COUNTRY
"Portugal is the' most cosmopolitan country in Europe to-day, according to a traveller recently returned to Manchester. Lisbon's caic population includes British, French, Belgians, Poles, Dutch, as well a? Germans and Italians. Hie people are living in a strained atmosphere, but an amusing incident at one of the cinemas ir Oporto gives a clear indication where their sympathies really lie. The newsreel showing the movement .of German mechanised units was received in stony silence. There followed the sinking of the Graf Spee. for a moment everybody sat quiet. Then somebody in the audience had a flash of inspiration. Rising to his seat he shouted 'Three Cheers for the Oporto Football Club.' The response was immediate, the crowd yielling hurraiis fight to the end of the performance." —Lucio, in the Manchester Guardian.
