CLEARING THE AIR

SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFIT

LOCAL CASE CITED

In a letter from the local branch of the Labour Party, we have been requested to ventilate the contents of a letter received recently fro-mi the act-" ing-Commissioner of Social Security relative to the withholding of sickness benefit in the case of a claimant having received' a gratuous donation from his fellow employees. "There are a lot of rumours about the town concerning this case," read the letter, "aind the publication of the lettter received 1 by this branch from Wellington would go a long way towards stopping them." The letter reads: "I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of July 24th, (and' have noted your enquiry concerning the payment of sickness benefit insofar as it is affected by the money subscribed! by workmates to supplement the grant available from the Social Security! Fund. Having regard to the nature of the payment mentioned; I would inform youi that the Commission would not take this amount into account in assess<ing the sicl:ne!ss benefit from the Social Security fund. The District Agent in Whakatane has been informed of this matter and if you will advice: him' of the name of the person concerned the necessary action will' be taken." The matter has already been followed up and l satisfactorily settled.
