CEREMONY AT COUNTY CHAMBERS
In view of his taking his departure for Trentham Camp for a month's course and subsequent returning to take charge oi the Home Guard in the Bay of Plenty, Mir C. H. Brebner. recently appointed Staff-Captain of the New Zealand Army, was met by member/ of the County Council, the chairman of the Hospital Board and staff members at the county chambers on Wednesday, afternoon.
The chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, stated that he had been called upon to make a serious decision in a very short time when by telephone he was asked to release Mr Brebner by Army authorities. However, reluctant though he was, with the position explained to him and realising the urgency of the work he had seen no other course but to agree to the release. He had felt that the needs of the country should come first and he was pleased that without exception the other councillors had confirmed his action.
Mr Burnett stated that Mr Brebner had his heart and soul in the work and the Army was fortunate to obtain his services. In wishing him every success and a speedy return he handed Mr Brebner a gift.
Mr J. W. Sumner, chairman of llie Harbour Board, endorsed the chairman's remarks and extended best wishes to Mr Brebner, who he said had done excellent work as consulting-engineer to the Board. He hoped he would soon be able to resume his civil work.
On behalf of the staff Mr G. G. Lucas extended best wishes and stated that without doubt Mir Brebher would undertake his new duties with unbounded enthusiasm.
In reply Mr Brebner said tliat ma decision had been a difficult one but he felt that he was doing the correct thing. He hoped that, as he ivould be stationed at Whakatane on return from camp he would often meet members of the council.
