BLACKOUT BREACHES

POSITION AT OHOPE

ACTION TO BE TxYKEN

When lighting regulations -were under discussion at the .■meeting of the County Emergency Precautions Committee -on Wednesday dissatisfaction! was expressed regarding the lack of observation of the re- - quirements at Ohope. Following a report from the Controller, Mr J. A. Dicker, the Ohope ' warden, Mr T. P. Dowling explained the position to the meeting, and if those neglectful residence owners do not come up to scratch it is likely that prosecutions will follow.

Mr Dicker in his report stated, in regard to a question raised by fhe committee whether the sky£low in the vicinity of the Paper Mills was quite in order, that the position was satisfactory. He added tjjyf more rigid supervision was required at Ohope, and as respecting the Borough, on Hillcrest. The latter area did not concern the County committee.

The Deputy Controller of the. E.P.S. reported that Mr Webb, Blackout Warden at Ohope had resigned and was now living at Opotiki, and Mr Dowling had been appointed. Mir Dowling had put in a great deal of work and owing to the spasmodic habitation of several €>f the dwellings had found the problem difficult.

Mr Dowling stated -the position to be verjr unsatisfactory, some doing their very best while others made no effort at all. The fault lav where people owning houses Averc of the "get rich quick"' variety and let their houses for short periods Jind spent nothing on them.

Visitors would arrive to occupv the cottages and find no blackout provisions and this was not fair lo them or to others on the beach. Tlie .matter should not be one of cost as that was negligible but the carelessness and laziness should be corrected. Mr Dowling stated that he had 1 report prepared for the Controller.
