A POPULAR RESIDENT
MR L. H. BROWN FAKEWELLEI>
REPRESENTATIVE ATTENDANCE
Organised by local stock firms a. farewell was tendered Mr L. 11. Brown at the Winter Show Hall on Saturday evening, the attendance being a large and representative one including members of the Home Guard Mounted Troop and visitors from Tauranga and Opotiki. The evening was occupied with the honouring of a short toast list andmusical items. During the evening, the chairman, Mr P. Sisamv made a presentation on behalf of those present,, handing Mr Brown a crystal decanter set and, in doing so, paying. '■ high' tribute to his many fine qualities. During his seven and a half years in Whakatane Mr Brown had eatnecT popularity in both his business and private circles and earned ings,. with stock men- impressed by ings, withs tock men impressed by his keen idea of stock values. An earnest expression of regret at losing Mr Brown was made by the chairman. Other speakers were Messrs Fetch* r. Brassey r F. Gartsliore, Rowan, Li. Luxton, D&vies and Burgess. Mr Brown suitably replied. During the evening items were rendered by Messrs H. Armstrong (vocal solos), Tony Smith (humour) Alex Davis, of - Opotiki, while Mr El. B. Mollgaard was the pianist, with Mr G. Wallace supplying music far community singing-. The toast list was honoured as follows:-—The: King; The Visitors, proposed by Mr W. C. Roberts ant? responded to by Mr Alex Davies: * Absent Friends, (Mr W. Sullivan); Fighting Services (Mr B. S. Barry —Mr J. W. Wilson); The Ladles (Mr A.' Bridget-—Mir Dennis Pearee)*. The Artists (Mr Arthur HalT—Mi* Tony Smith). Home Guard Ceremony On Saturday afternoon an impressive ceremony took place when Mr L. H. Brown Troop Leader of the Home Guard Mbtmteds handed 1 : over his command to Mr W. Rowan, In view of his approaching d'epar- ; ture to live at Hastings.. The trooj> i leaders were also appointed, namely Messrs K. G. Runciman and B. Sharp. The ceremony concluded ; with the march-past with Mr Krowi> taMng the salute-.
