OMATAROA ROADS
PROBLEM FOR COUNTY COUNCIL
DRAINAGE IN" BAD STATE
"The problem is a big one the roads being in a primitive condition and obviously have been shunned and dodged in the past" said Mr J. L. Burnett, chairman of the Whakatane County Council on Tuesday when Omataroa roads were being discussed following a report by the Works Committee. "The inspection 1 opened the eyes of the Works Committee who were surprised to 'find the conditions as "-they are," he added. Mr Burnett continued to state thai the drainage of the land was also in a very backward state—in fact being practically nil. This he stated had evidently been left by the drainage authorities and it was a great pity as the land was equal, if not better, than the best on the Plains. The work on roads would have to be faced and it was urgent that improvements be effected, while at the same time representation should be made to the Drainage Department regarding the state of the land* The County Engineer reported that he estimated Omataroa Road improvements would cost as follows:— Pahou Road, 42 chains formation at 30s, £72, 720 cubic yards gravel at 3s, £108; £180.
