RACING NOTES
SURE PAY'S WITHDRAWAL The withdrawal of Sure Pay from the Admiralty Handicap on Saturday was due to the son of Autopay receiving a slight injury when the float which brought him to the course was involved in a minor accident. Sure Pay was expected to race well, and it was bad luck for the stable that he could not be started. AGAIN DISAPPOINTED The Posterity horse Sir Cameron had been galloping well enough in training to encourage the belief that he would make a good showing in the Jellicoe but at no stage of the ra~e did he threaten to take part in the linish. He looked well, but showed no brilliancy at all, although he was up fifth at the judge. A FINE EFFORT Though defeated into third place, Radiant Vaals ran a fine race in the Jellicoe Handicap with 9.2. He began well, ran to the front, to be joined by British Talent and the pair raced each other in the lead into the straight, where British Talent weakened. Radiant Vaals kept on and was still in front inside the last furlong, but in the'last bit failed to hold off Lovaals and Young Paddon. BADLY INTERFERED WITH The Hastings trained Summons was backed down to a short price in the Hunt Cup on Saturday, which was not surprising as the Sky Blue gelding had won three times in as many starts. Any. chance he had wasi completely ruined early when he appeared. to be stopped by a horse falling in front of him after jumping the brush fence near the mile cost the first time. Summons was almost down, and, before P. Burgess could get his balance again, he had lost the best part of a furlong. From that point onward his chance was hopeless, REGAL FOX UNLUCKY The unlucky horse on Saturday was Regal Fox in the Auckland Handicap. He received anything but a good run, and just after entering the straight he received a check which cost him a couple of lengths and probably made the difference between a victory and defeat. He finished on in great style over the las;t furlong and with ordinary hick should be a good stake winner this season. POOR JUMPING For horses who had duly qualified at hunts during the season it musr be said that the jumping at Ellerslie on Saturday was disappointing. In the Greenmount Steeplechase there were eight starters and only two got round without a mistake. Brandon Hall winning by a big margin from the outsider Te Kapia. Promenade who came down at one of the fences on the hill the last time, was remounted to finish the course and get third. In the Hunf Cup later in the day the jumping was again bad. This time there were 14 starters and eight of the horses came down. AGAIN IN WORK BalLnavar, a good class hack of a year ago, is now a member at Te Rapa in the team presided over by C. L. Goulsbro. MAKING A RECOVERY The 194.1 Herries Memorial Cup winner, Cillas, arrived in India recently, in rather a weak condition, having, with other equines, contracted fever on the voyage. Latest reports, however, are to the effect that he is making good progress. WELLINGTON SPRING MEETING Despite rumours to the contrary the Wellington Racing Club authoritatively states its spring meeting will be held on October 23, 25 and 27. A PROMISING THREE YEAR OLD Trainer J. W. Cxithro, of Mataniata, who by perseverance got ThtCaidinal into winning form recently has a promising three year old in his team. This is Nena, by Foxbridge— Quinkama. a half-sister te Suleiman. She is forward in condition and may lie seen out at the Poverty Bay Turf Club meeting next month. RACING FIXTURES AUGUST
