EDGECUMBE WATER

PROPOSED SCHEME

SUPPLY FROM FACTORY

Councillor D. W. Spence, riding member for Edgecumbe, has with the county engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, been invest - ti,gating schemes for supplying Edffecumbe residents with water. One scheme suggested was , estimated to cost about £2000 ■? and tfiis was abandoned; so at this week's meeting of the County Council another was suggested at a cost under £600. The latest suggestion is that tvith the factory; having agreed to supply water at 5d per 1000 gal-, lins a 2y 2 inch pipe line will be in- . stalled as far as the private hotel from where the guage of the pipe, line will decrease. Cr W. A. McG'racken stated that it had been estimated that 6000 gallons daily would be sufficient to supply the residences' involved and, «t 5d per 1000 gallons, this would cost about £45 per annum.. The supply would be one which would be stored in tanks by the residents and thus a small pipe line without a booster pump should be satisfactory. The water would be chlorinated. Cr Spence stated that the offer of the Dairy Company was one' which should be acceptable and that the expense to a resident should not be more than £3 per annum if water was used reasonably. He also, spoke of the need to prepare for the future of the town as it was progressing. No provision for fire control was existing at present and that was another feature which made the installation of a water scheme necessary, and demanded that the installation should be arranged so that the scheme could expand. C'r Spence felt that the area to be served should pay for the service by a special rate and the county clerk is at present engaged in arranging matters to that end. Matata Supply * The council also arranged to finance the renewals necessary to- the Matata water supply which for some time has been causing trouble. Cr F. J. Burt for some time has urged the necessity for renewa/s and with an investigation made the council agreed to loan the funds necessary to do the work.
