MUST CEASE
PROWLING IN THE BLACKOUT HEAVY PENALTIES THREATENED The fact that prowling under cover of the "blackout" must cease was stressed by Messrs G. A. Brabant and J. G. Mulholland; J's.P., at the local court on Wednesday when two natives appeared charged with being unlawfully on premises. To emphasise their earnestness in this resolution th« Bench sentenced the offenders to one month's gaol, at the same time pointing out that the sentence could' have been three months or a fine of £10. The men, Patoro Watarawi and Waiaka Clay ov Micky Clay, on the night of August 24 made their way into the domestic quarters at the Whakatane Hospital and alarmed the young women occupants. The matter was reported to the police and, on the following day, as a result of a diligent enquiry, the men ivere arrested. Addressing the bench Sergeant M. Farrell stressed the need for stern measures to be taken stating that the practice of prowling at night was increasing and causing alarm in many instances. "There is a good deal of this sort of thing going on and it needs suppressing with a firm hand," said the Sergeant.
