CRETE SOUVENIR
SCHMELING'S PAY-BOOK
"One of my pals has just handed back from Crete with Max Schmeling's pay-book, Jvvaticli, and a Ipjiece of fabric from his parachute." Writing from Egypt, WarrantOfficer A. F. Abbott, wellknown West Australian boxer, said this in r t letter to a friend in Perth.
This is the only reference to Schmeling in B Abbott's letter, which deals mostly with other Western. Australian boxers serving in the Middle East. British reports claim that Schmeling, former heavyweight champion of the world, was shot dead in Crete in May while trying to escape from his JSTew Zealand captors.
On June 16, however, Berlin radio said that Schmeling was
in hospital in Athens, and had been awarded the Iron Cross (second class) for bravery.
Schmeling was one of the first Nazi parachutists to land in Crete.
