GYMNASIUM FOR WHOM?
Sir, —I heartily disagree \yith those who say Whakatane needs a gymnasium. Let us get or. with the war effort, and not waste time over trifles. If your correspondent "Physical Fatness" and his friends wsint to take off surplus weight I can asspre them they will get more good by working, walking and running than by doing contortions in a gymnasium.* Now, as for working, I presume those who are shriekihg out for a gymnasium (for which the public is expected to subscribe) .be folk who don't do any physical work worth speaking of. Yery well then, there are plenty of tough jobs waiting for them in the as they can see by the advertisements in the papers. I am sure "Physical Fatness" is not a farmer, otherwise he would get plenty of exercise between dawn and dusk and would be glad to -set his alarm clock and creep into bed and go to* sleep (without any sleeping draught). Then there is walking - —a good exercise and weight reducer, but a bit old-fashioned in these days. I dare say "Phvsical Fatness" is one who rides in a car instead of walking. If he (or is it she)* wants to reduce weight what is wrong with going for a walk of several* miles before bedtime? Then there is running. Let our gymnasium enthusiasts form themselves into a Marathan Race Running Club anrli go for a run along the road for a few miles and back. That is cheaper and just as good as spending'money on a gymnasium. As for the patriotic ladies who may be interested in x a gymnasium—surely they can get plenty of exercise by putting on sensible shoes with low heels and going for a route march (with or without a piper and gentlemen escorts) . Yes, I have done a good bit of walking, running and working in my time, and I see no reason other people cannot do the same. Other persons more illustrious than ourselves also walked. In fact, Bishop Selwyn walked all over the North Island in the 1840's. He did not shriek out for a gymnasium.
Yours etc.,
B. TUFF.
