GIRL ASSAULTED
SOLDIER CHARGED
SIX WEEKS' HARD LABOUR
A charge of assaulting a girl on Thursday night, August 14, was brought against a soldier on leave from Papakura Gamp, before Messrs G. S. Moody and G. Pipe, J.Pfs.. at the Opotiki Courthouse this week. The soldier involved was Henry Lingman, aged 25 years. Accused pleaded guilty to the charge.
The prosecution stated that tlm man had molested the young lady during the screening of a picture, having followed her and sat in the next seat. When the entertainment had concluded the man had taken the girl by the arm and reftjsfed to let her go after walking her into another street. The girl cried, for assistance and the police had been summoned. The bench staled that it would take a lenient view on account of accused being a soldier, but otherwise the penalty would have been a heavy one. Accused would be sentenced to six weeks' imprisonment in Auckland with hard labour.
