CHARGE FOR ELECTRICITY

DECISION OF COUNCIL

At the July meeting of the Borough Councili at recommendation was received from the Finance Committee that power for cooking by electricity at the local hospital be supplied at ld ; per unit. The Hospital Board had written stating that it was a suggestion that 'the kitchen at the hospital be equipped

with electric stoves

At that meeting the recommendation was not adopted on the sug- • gestion of Cr W. Sullivan the electrical engineer being instructed to make enquiries as to what charges "were made in other districts. On Monday night the report was furnished, stating that in no part of the Dominion was more than Id per unit charged for such consumption. This would be Id less than the usual cooking charge made in 1 Whakatane.

In reply to Cr Sullivan it was stated that the Hospital Board might not instal the stoves for some time, the suggestion having come from the Department. Cr Sullivan pointed out that it might not be wise to give an assurance that the rate would be one penny if that was the case as conditions may have altered considerably in a few years.

His Worship the Mayor pointed out that in the original recommendation the Finance Committee had not hound itself stating that the supply would be forthcoming only if the required power was available. This should protect the Council a:-, /power authoritv.
