RUBBISH DUMP

POSITION MISUNDERSTOOD

NEED FOR BETTER ARRANGEMENT

When a letter was received at ISlonday's meeting of the Borough Council suggesting, that the • Council and the Harbour Board! meet to discuss the proposal of the Council to acquire a portion of the mudi flats for use as a rubbish dump with: a view to re- • claiming the area for a parking • ground, Hils-Worship the Mayor referred to a reported discussion • on the question! which took place at the recent meeting of the - Board. His Worship stated that it was evident by the remarks passed that the members of the Harbour Board : had not been fully aware of the facts rubbish dump. It had £ been seated that the Board had made the Council an offer which was accepted but that the Council had not fulfilled the conditions.

This was not correct, the Mayor •claimed, adding that be had met the chairman of the Harbour Board and the arrangement made that the 'Council use a portion of the land for •dumping rubbish and that so much per cubic 3 ri ard be paid for its recla- "■ mation. However, later a letter had been received from the Board and conditions imposed that had not been previously mentioned. Consequently the Council had not been willing to -enter the agreement and had replied to that effect. The conditions had not been mentioned in the first instance. The council had then come to. the conclusion that the only thing to do was to reclaim land for themselves and the only Avay one local body could obtain land from another was under the Public Works Act. "We did the courteous thing," said Mr Barry, "and instead of going straight ahead wrote to the Board asking them to agree to the taking of the land mentioned. I', still hold the opinion that we should acquire land for ourselves.. However, I am quite willing that, we should meet the Board and clear up the misunderstanding."

It was .decided that the Board be that the Council would meet 'them at the Council Chambers at a ilate to be arranged.
