Abattoir Proposal.

The Borough Council and the County Council are to meet to discuss matters pertaining to the proposed municipal abattoirs on Friday. August 22. Building' in Town. Last month the Borough Council issued building permits totalling £2406 7s 6d in value. Permits were obtained for new residences (2), additions to residences (4), garages (1) sheds (3). First Offenders. One native and one palteha were arrested on Saturday for drunkenness, 10/- bail being estreated from the former and the palteha who spent the week-end in the gaol, being convicted and discharged. The physical training classes for the Home Guard v/ill be held at the Winter Show Hall to-morrow between 6.30 and 7.30 p.m. Members are requested to take advantage of these classes for which instructors have been trained. Borough Finance,, .At Monday's meeting of the katane Borough Council accounts totalling £1755 lis 10d were passed for payment. The General Account revealed a credit balance of £176 13s Ul while a debit of £163 0s 6'd was shown in the Electricity Department. Stock Impounded. The Borough Inspector reported to Monday's Council meeting that a total of 24 head of stock had been impounded during the month, comprising 21 cows and heifers and 3 horses. Thirteen head were, released, and aged horse died, while ten head remained unclaimed.

Street Appeal,

The Auckland Orphanages have niade application to the Borough Council for permission to hold a street appeal in the town. The Mayor explained at Monday's meeting that last year permission was granted and the town cleric contacted the churches and arranged for collectors. "This is a deserving cause—those poor little children have no one else to look after them" he said moving that the request be granted.

Sunday Cream Collection

Once again Sunday is no longer a "day of rest" for many residents of the Rangitaiki Plains. Last weekend witnessed the Plains Dairy Com pany's well known green motor trucks on their rounds on Sunday morning, bringing to an end the winter period during which no cream is collected on Sundays. Truck drivers, and factory workers, not to mention suppliers, certainly had a busy time for much of the day. This week cream is beiiig collected every other day, and daily collection will begin next Monbday.
