U-BOAT SAVAGERY
TWENTY KILLED IN LIFEBOAT
ENTIRE FAMILY WIPED OUT
Tlic savagery of a U-boat commander who fired a torpedo and killed 20 people helpless in an open lifeboat was described to the London News-Chronicle by survivors of the Holt liner Eurymedon who landed at a West Coast port in England. Casualties totalled 29 —10 British members of the crew, 10 Chinese and nine passengers, all Dutch. "The lifeboats were still hanging In the davits, being lowered Avher the torpedo struck with, a tremendous explosion," said a member of the crew. "Two of the lifeboats wen? smashed, and in one of tliem, Avliicii had just touched the water, 20 people were killed instantly. Of these,
nine were passengers, among them a Father, a mother and two daughters —an entire family wiped out. "The submarine then surfaced and cruised around for a while, with what intention we did not know. Then we saw a spure of smoke, on clie horizon and the submarine dived. The smoke belonged to a British
warship."
