DRAIN ON MANPOWER

DOMINION'S COMMITMENTS

REVEALING BALLOT FIGURES

Up to the present time 52,000 single men in New Zealand have been drawn in ballots for oversells service with the military forces.

I'n last week's ballot the balance of the single men were called up, and with the accretions to the list of those who have reached the age of 21 years the numbc| of men called total 23,825. This will bring the total number of men called for mili-

tary service overseas to nearly 76.000 since the first ballot which was gazetted on October 2, 1940, just 10 months ago.

These figures, of course, do not take into account the number of

men who went overseas as. volunteers! during the first 12 months of the war before compulsory national servicc was brought into operation, nor the Air Force and Naval volunteers, and their number must add many thousands to the Dominion's contribution of man-power to the

Empire's war effort

Territorial Ballots

There have been five ballots for territorial service, in which a Dominion total of 55,260 men have been called up, so that the Dominion has so far called up for training a grand total of 107,266 men in nine months. The dotes of the ballots with rsp ( - proximate number of men called up in are as follows:— October 2, 1940' .... 14,000 November 11, 1940 21,000 December 4, 1940 14,000 (Overseas) March 3, 1941 19,000 (Overseas) March 26, 1941 7,710 April 29, 1941 1,445 May 7, 1941 19,000 (Overseas) June 24, 1941 ... 11,111 .107,266 .To this must be added the number in last week's ballot, 23,825.
