N.Z. SOLDIER'S SLEEPING QUARTERS Cairo, June 30. It was only 14 miles behind the front line in a sector in which fighting has been taking place in the eastern desert quite recently, and a Mew Zealander was Avorliing a caterpillar tractor engaged on road in>proA r emcnt Avork. For strategical reasons an order AA T as received to moA r e back quickly and commence work elseAvhere. This New Zealander has "acquired" an abandoned Italian ambulance Avliicli he AA r a? using as his sleeping quarters. He Avas faced Avith a long toAV, but was determined not to leave his precious find behind, and set off Avilh the vehicle behind. For miles this queer combination travelled at a snail's pace, and at last he arrived safely with his travelling bed. Another instance was met Avhich ;lioavs that the Avell nigh famous quality of scrounging which characterised the N.Z.E.F. in the last AA r ar has not diminished in any way. This concerned a sapper avlio in his 'spare" time was making a lorrj' but of odds and ends from vehicles which had been left by the wayside (is of no further use. This soldier Avas also among those »vho received the order to move and lie Avas quite disappointed because he had not completed the job sufficiently to alloAV the truck to be driv< en under its oAvn poAver. He was driving a poAver grader, so not to he outdone he promptly attached his nearly completed truck and towed (t aAvay Avith him to finish it at n later date.
