THE BOYS BAND.
APPARENTLY many citizens feel that they should afford Crs Canning and Armstrong a greater measure of support in their fight for further recognition for the Whaka, tane Boys Band. The public meeting announced for Tuesday next will afford people the opportunity for ventilating their opinions, and if need be, bring pressure to bear upon the Borough Council for a more liberal allocation for the,, band. The question is one which is not without its difficulties. The Council's plea of poverty in view of the increasing number of demands made upon its finances, is probably well grounded, but there are those in the town who consider that it should be prepared to spread itself a little in this instance in ord.er to keep the band in existence. The band in itself is a singular possession for any town of Whakatane's size. We know of only two others in the Province, both of which are within the larger metropolitan areas, The boys have acquitted themselves exceedingly well, and have caught the public fancy. There-can be no doubt but that popular opinion Avill clamour for the retention of the band in face of the threat to disband which ha,s been mentioned. Tuesday's meeting will therefore afford an opportunity for public opinion and should this be great enough we feel we can rest assured that the Borough Council will be prepared to re-in-troduce the matter and possibly amend its original motion.
