BICYCLE THIEVES TOO MANY OFFENCES When addressing the Bench at a sitting of theTlocal couirt on, Monday, Sergeant M. Fafcrrell; as'ked the Justices to ordVir a heavy penalty when HanuJ T'a<i-« kakoa was charged' with the theft of a bicycle, sitaiting that offences of this nature Werjes growing in number and thfe offenders must be taught a lesson. Sergeant Farrell continued that it appeared that natives were the chief offenders and the removal of cycles meant great inconvenience *to the owners who required them to go Ho and from work and could il-J afToftd the loss. In the case of Tailtakoa, he had taken the cycle and ridden it to Ruatoki from Avliere it had been recovered . The accused pleaded that he was a first offender and that he 'had *a dairy herd to milk and family -to keep. He asked that he be fined and not imprisoned. The Justices took into account his plea but pointed out that tlie offence was a serious one and sentenced him to seven days; in the local gaol.
