Dredge on the Road 1 . Thei Lands Department's Rustc.n Bucyrus dvedge, which has completed the deepening of a section of tho Orini Creek alongside the Whaka-iane-<Matata road, proceeded on its caterpillar tracks to Thornton during Monday. The unusual spectacle vf this mechanical monster crawling *ilong the road made residents "stop. <ook and listen." This dredge is now working on the diversion of the tiangitaiki River. False Fire Alarm. The Whakatane Fire Brigade was called out j r esterday at about 3.45 p.m. the alarm being a false , one caused by workmen on the telephone lines contacting the alarm wires. The call was registered on the No. 1 box near the Union Bank and the brigade* was promptly on the scene. This was the second false alarm during the week, on Tuesday evening at 7.25 an ordinary fault being responsible for the engine going out.
