THE CHANGE-OVER TO CHEESE

THOSE farmers who are inconvenienced by the, changeover to cheese manufacture;, should make themselves conversant with the facts that made this move imperative. Already the butter glut in New Zealand had produced a bogey which threatened to overbalance the complete dairy industry. Another year of a similar nature would, according to one authority, destroy the price stability in spite of all the official protection which could be given by the Government. Cheese, a commodity whiah stores better, lasts longer in the average household, ancl is more concentrated is considered of more value to Britain. The change-over has been made in deference to a direct request from Great Britain, and in this district effects a substantial section of the suppliers to the Rangitaiki Dairy Company. By September it is hoped to be able to manufacture the first cheese under the new scheme, which includes the equipping of a new factory, which will be housed in the premises near the Whakatan Paper Mills, and owned by Associated Fibre Millers Ltd. The full co-operation of district farmers affected by the change is needed to make the venture a successful one, and we have no doubt but that this will be forthcoming.
