LIEUT. H. O. STEWART'S DEATH FURTHER DETAILS TO HANDf With the latest Air Mail, has ai\ rived details concerning the heroic death of Lieut. Horton Stewart ir> Crete, last month. Lieut. Stewart was apparently leading his men in i last bayonet charge at Suda Tiny, before the main body were evacuated. when he was shot down. HH narticipation in the charge was quite voluntary, as his own platoon was held in reserve, and actually ho was not called upon to take part. Howaver his keenness to assist hi' Maori comrades overcame his scruples in this direction, and he was last seen charging at their head in order to hold up the advancing Germans, and thus afford cover to those troopswho were leaving by boat. Says Pte. H. L. (formerly a member of the BEACON* staff) in a letter received yesterday: "'I hear a great story of Horton. He was killed while leading his men in a charge—and did he lead them— fifty yards ahead. One report said 150 yards ahead, when he was killed. It was; certainly a great inspiration." The date of his death Avas given as May 27, so that it was just a month later before his relations were notified of the fact.
