STRANGLES
DEPARTMENTAL CARELESSNESS FARMERS CONCERNED At the last meeting of the) Executive of the Auckland Farmers' Union a remit came forward frcm the Taumarunui branch to the cffect that an urgent request should be made to the Ministers of Railways and of Agriculture in regard to the cleaning of railway trucks, with.particular reference to strangles and other diseases. It Mas strongly recommended that cleaning stations should be provided at central points, in particular at Taumarunui. In supporting the remit Mr Hallyburton Johnstone cited his own experience with regard to horses taken for the Waiouru camp. He said he had a valuable mare taken foi military purposes fitted, when sh« went away, with a complete set of shoes. When she was returned three months latar she still had 3 of the original sfhoes on. They had never been touched. Any farmer would know how harmful such treatment was. It seemed to him that thorc was disgraceful laxity in regard to the care of horses, which were turned out in winter time without covers, and; were subjected to the risk of disease through failure to disinfect nosebags.
