BOWLING SEASON

PRESIDENT S ANNUAL REPORT A SUCCESSFUL. YEAR REVIEWED Mr S. McLeod, retiring president of the Whakatane. BoAvling Club, presented the folknving report to Saturday's meeting:— In presenting to you my annual report I wish to congratulate the Club on having a very successful' season from both a playing and a financial aspect.. During the season the usual competitions were held, all games being very keenly contested and the boAvling Avas of the usual high standard seen on the Whakatane Greens). The Avinners of the competitions are to be congratulated for their victories and I would like to make special mention of the Singles Championship as this competition produced excellent boAvling, not only from the eventual Avinner Mr W. G. Baxter, but also from seA r eral other contestants wli.o reached the final stages. The Championship Pairs werei Avon by Messrsl HoAvat and Littlejohn and the! Junior Singles by Mr Gj Oswald avlio Avas also successful in the Handicap Singles. Mr Baxter Avas again to the fore in the Handicap Pairs in Avhich llei Avas partnered by Mr L. Berg. The usual tournaments Avere held on Labour Day, Christmas, New Year and Easter and there were also somq boAvler's picnics. These tournaments brought in the sum of £70 7s 8d arid although it is slightly below last year's figure, I consider it to be very satisfactory. On Boxing Day the Whakatane Club paid its annual visit to Opotiki and Avas successful in defeating both the Citizens and the Opotiki Club. When the Opotiki Clubs returned the visit on January 29th the Whakatane Club Avas again successful in both games. Whakatane Avas successful in retaining the Shield against Taneatua Avinning tAVo series out of three and our Feather's team' also defeated Taneatua for the first time for three seasons. Inter club games Avere again played Avith the Te Puke Club and Whakatanei Avere the Avinners both fit Te Puke and Whakata'ie. These games are A*erv much enjoyed by our members and the pleasure derived irom them is much more important than the result. In July the Sparc section OAvncd. by the club Avas sold to Mr A. White"and from thei money received a special repayment of £50 Avas mads by the club to the Building Society. Taking into consideration the cost of smweying, commission and other expenses the club shoAved a profit of about £15 on the sale. The club's thanks are due to Mr R. F. Smith for attending to the legal work in connection Avith the sale, free of charge. The financial side in spite of increased costs and a rise in Avages slioavs that our excess of assets ever liabilities hasl arisen by £75 13s 3d. This is an excellent result, and slioavs that Avith an increase in membership the club Avould soon be very Avell off. One feature of the Balance Sheet is: that all the subscriptions for the year have bean fully paid up and I trust that this Avill also bej the case in future years. Our greens, under the supervision of Mr Healy, noAV compare very favourably Avith the best greens in the Centre and many favourable comments Avere heard from visitors, about the improvement of our playing surfaces. As delegates to the Bay of Plenty Centre, Mr Drube and I attended the annual meeting and it gives me great pleasure to report that Whakatane becomes the Centre for next se,ason, and that the Forbes Cup Tournament, Avhich is a three days open tournament, Avill be held on our greens at NeAV Year. As instructed by our committee Ave applied for permission to hold a three day's tournament next Easter and this Avas , granted Avith assurances of support from mosi of the clubs represented at the meeting. I hope that our club members Avill give these two tournaments their full support. It Avas also decided that the Champion of Champions' Singles and Executive Fours competition will again be played on the Whakatane Green and not bo left to the Bay Executive to decide Avliere they should be held I regret that during the season the club lost through death two highly esteemed members in Mr F. Britten and Mr G. Rant], In both cases floral emblems Avere sent aivthe club's sympathy extended to the relatives. The club Avas also avcll represented at both funerals. (Continued in next column) I111P?/' JZI.

The ladies aalio so ably assisted whenever required are thanked on behalf of the club as they play a large part in the entertaining of visitors. I'n conclusion I Avish to thank those members Avho donated trophies, the Secretary. Mr Drube, for good Avork done and alsia my committee for the loyal support they haA r e giA'cn me during my term of office and I hope the same sujjport Avill be giA 7 en to the incoming president.
