A VAIN QUEST
SEARCH FOR SILK STOCKINGS DEMAND IN LONDON Even up to a short time ago London drapery stores were being liesieged by women requesting silk stockings, according to the London Daily Telegraph, so it seems that New Zealand Avonien are in good company. A large English firm's buyer said Avhen intervi.cAved: "Women just refuse to believe it is impossible to offer any more. Some of them are quite indignant because avc have to say 'No.'" The problem has beicome so difficult that one firm Avas not handling this class of hosiery any longer. The position became so serious that the Board of Trade instigated a ceinsus. of manufacturers' and AA'holesalers' stocks. Holders of stocks Avere asked to send in reports so that the board would have an idea of the amount of hosiery available for export. A sipokesman said the board Avas anxious to export every pair it aould, but that if it were found that there Avere stockings Avliich could not be exported the ban on home sales AA r ould be lifted.
