RIVER EROSION
DANGER TO MAIN HIGHWAY SUPPORT FOR BOROUGH COUNCIL The request of the Whakatane Borough Council that the County Council take action regarding erosion of the river at the south of the main' Whakatane Highway Bridge has been considered by the County Council. i When the Borough Council drew the attention of the Public Works Engineer to the matter he referred them to the County Council. However, the County Council does not agree that the responsibility is theirs and declines to accept any since they no longer control the main highway. The councillors ate also apprehensivq regarding the continued and increasing clanger and agree tha' the position warrants early investigation and action towards arresting the erosion which is taking place, by suitable protective work. It was decided to support the Borough Council in any application it might make to the authorities. The chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, stated that the Public Works Department Engineer had pointed out that the main highway might in the future not take the route now used, but that was, not a good argument as- the road would have to be kept open. Mr Burnett said he did not believe that a new highway would be made for many years.. Cr H. C. McGready pointed out the erosion had been taking place for many years and had caused a great deal of expense to a land owner who had at one time had to move his house at a cost of £75.
