THE P.O. CLOCK
"IT MAY BE FOR YEARS AND TH MAY BE FOREVER'* (With apologies to the "Village) Pump") There's a pretty little township by „ the sea Where we work and have our living —you and me, There's a 'Rock' you think itskgrancl* At the entrance to the Strand, And a Paper Mill that goes eternally* There are offices and shops, all down the street _ And there's water in the gutters clean and sweet But you make no mistake; In the thing that takes the cakci Is our greatest stomach ache— The! P.O. clock. The P.O. Clock. Is in the Dock For its hands are at nine o'clock Whatever day or week Its hands they fairly shriek Its, nine, nine, nine, o'clo'ckNow we've had a little. argument of late, About some numbers 'one to fifty-* eight' . But we simply beat the air witH petitions everywhere The official time is always nine o'clock. Then we thought we'd like to lever up the pubs With a multiple thanks-offering in 'tubs' But in spite of all the powers You get nuthin' after hours: The accusin' time is always nine o'clock. The P.O, clock—Oh what a knock.) Its afternoon, but yet its nine o'clock* You can bet your bottom dime If its tea or breakfast time N Its nine, nine, nine o'clock. Yer don't know when to get into your bed Or when to rise an shave yer blinkin" 'ead But the County Housing Scheme, like White Island blowing steam. Will all be settled after nine o'clock. The Pipers thought they'd give King Street a boost But the toffs, went \ip to Hilltrest for a roost. Now they sing another song For their clocks are always wrong Unless they nail the hands on nine o'clock. The P.O. clock, it doesn't mock. It just says nine o'clock. If there's one thing that is sure , A new P.O. will cure The chronic state of bluff at nine o'clock.
