BEAUTIFY WHAKATANE
TREE PLANTING
At the last meeting, of the Chainber of Commerce the question of beautifying the town by tree planting was brought forward. This used to be carried on by the Whakatane Beautifying Society (now defunct) the members of the Chamber thought that something could he done to continue the good work already accomplished. A committee was appointed to go into the matter. The committee are Messrs R. F. Smith, G. A. Brabant, J. Creeke, G. Kent and G. C. Sputhey. Inquiries are being made as to the nature of the trees and shrubs most suitable for town planning, but the committed are faced with the problem of finance. .However we understand an effort is to be made to plant some trees during this season. The committee would gladly accept any suggestions from citizens as to where, and th<» kind of trees that should be planted. At the same time any subscriptions towards the cost would be most acceptable by any member of the committee or if left at the office of the Beacon.
