An Old Homestead'. An Edgecumbe landmark, the twostoreyed homestead on the Awaroa Estate near the butter factory, was recently repainted—no. small job, as this house is probably the largest in the Whakatane district. It was built about 30 years ago by the latn Mr Charles Reid, who then owned nil the land between what are now the townships of Edgecumbe and Thornton. Old-timers say it cost £2000 to build —but money went further in those days than it does today. Building material was brought ;-up the river from the port of Matata at the then mouth of the Rangitaiki, there being no roads on the Rangitaiki in those days.
