CAMP AT TAURANGA
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPRESENTATIONS • CLIMATE TOO ENERVATING Representations are to be made to the Minister of Defence, thoi Hon. F. Jones, by the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce with the object of having a permanent military camp established in the district. At » meeting of the chamber, it was decided to write to the Minister drawing his attention to the suitability of Tauranga as a site for an all-year camp. In speaking to his motion, Mr E. R. Dervan said he felt all would view with extreme satisfaction tho decision of the Government to establish an air training school at the Tauranga aerodrome. However, they must not lose sight of the suitability of Tauranga as an ideal pla'se for an. all-year military camp. Some of the camps in NeXv Zealand, he added, were not situated in the most desirable places, especially in thei winter months, but Tauranga was ideally situated. In liis opinion, it was particularly well situated for a mounted camp, especially the area in the vicinity of Mt. Maunganui, where there would be no danger of trcublei similar to that experienced recently at Waiouru. The advantages of the district, lie thought, were outstanding. Mr F. N. Christian said he* wondered very much whether this district was a suitable one. It occurred to him that the climate there might be too good. He believed thar ■what was required was a climate that would harden the men up; with Tauranga's wonderful climate they might become too soft.
