HOME GUARD
DISTRICT ACTIVITIES
REPLY TO CORRESPONDENT
Ixi our last issue a letter appeared signed "In the Dark"' seeking more information regarding, the activities of the Hjome Guard of the Whakatane area. We have made enquiries from the Adjutant, Mr G. Otley, and are now in the position to reply to the questions. Firstly we regret to state that to give a complete list of members of the Guard within the Whakatane area would tax our space too greatly as the 1400 names would occupy about seven columns. In connection with the suggestion that each district should regularly publish an account of its activities is one handed on to the Adjutant, who states that as the whole of the district platoons follow the same syllabus a great deal of repitition would result. However, in view of the wide interest ffreated by the Guard which concerns practically every family in the county, the Home Guard officials have expressed their willingness to supply some items of news at regular periods. THORNTON RIFLEMEN The Thornton Home Guard paraded at the Rangitaiki Rifle Club's H-ange on Saturday for its first shoot, using miniature targets at 30 yards range* One platoon fired 10 shots per man,, while the remainder look' ed on and listened to directions and ndvice by the officers. -The range officer was Sergt. W, J. Moore, better known as an official and leading marksmen of the Rifle Club. Good groupings on the targets were secured by the Home Guard marksmen, so that any Axis raiders Which attempt to land on Thornton Beach will meet with a "hot reception."
