AROUND THE ROCK

Sir,—Perhaps the BEACON could shed its light on the base of Pohu, taroa Rock in the vicinity of the sacred karaka trees and the bus terminal. Here —only a 50 yards jaywalk through the? Strand traffic from the offices of our worthy Mayor and Town Clerk—there always seems to bei a litter of waste paper and empty tobacco tins quite out of keeping with the sacredness of "our , * Rock. Perhaps His Worship will order a suitable rubbish basket to be placed here so that bus; passengers and others may be tempted let deposit their empty tins" and' superannuated paper therein. In any case the place wanta'a l clean up right now or nexfe time' our street cleaners are passing. Hidden by a new branch of one karaka tree is a notice in a glass case on a pole and placed there in 1924 by the (apparently now defunct) Whakatane Beautifying Society. This notice tells briefly tns unique character of Pohutaroa RockJ Unfortunately the glass is broken. Perhaps the wind or -the mice did that, or even maybe , it was vardalism (is there any vandalism n» Whakatane. I'rt any oase the printed paper is in daflgeir of disintegration under the influence, of the we.ither. However, if the notice is restored to what it was in 1924 the post needs moving, perhaps l to the vicinity of the Mtaori Memorial building. Thank you. Mr Editor, for shining your BEACON" on this little corner. No doubt you will s?e that something N is done about it all to make this place what it should be in view of the'historic interest that attaches to Pohutaroa Rock. Perhaps I should have called on the Mayor or Town Clerk and told them this, but not being a burgess of the borough I am writing to the Beacon instead. Yours etc., S. O. WHAT?
