Local and General

Deer at Galate.i. A local farmer states that deer are prolific on the Galatea station. He recently saw a mob of over forty running on the station, and being a keen sportsman bewail'ed the fact that shooting is not permitted on that property. Relief for Taxpayers. Taxpayers will.be faccd with less formidable income tax and social security forms this yaar, as the Government, in an effort to conserve supplies of paper, has reduced the forms from eight pages to four. Separate forms will be available for farmers, as in the past, but this yoar another separate form has been prepared for taxpayers who derive income from a business or profession. Returns must be made by June 2. The form of declaration of income other than salary or wages, for social security charge, is also half its former size, comprising only one sheet. There is little alteration in the form, but this year the social security register form, which last year had to be completed by all persons of 16 years or over, la not attached.

Patriotic Gesture. The excellent music of Mrs Arm-' 6trong's orchestra which played at the dance held last week to fare-' well the soldiers on leave was rendered free of charge, and her action in assisting tlio W.W.S.A. and Home Guard in this manner was greatly appreciated, Whakatane Rugby. A meeting, of the Rugby Union and Home Guar! officials is to take place at Taneatua to-night. It has already been decided that the Home Guard would enter into Rugby competitions this year, it being considered that such an organisation could assist in keeping the sport going throughout the war and also that the Guardsmen would benefit t)y the/ exercise. A further decision Vas made to the effect that all players this season should be members of the Home Guard, territorials or one of the services. We understand that a number of young men wish to don Jersey and shorts in junior tirade, but are not prepared to join one of the services to qualify for registration and their views are to be put before the committee tonight.
