HORSES BRING HIGH PRICES

Suffolk Punch geldings made the highest prices in their breed's history at Ipswich Spring Sale. Fourteen sold at figures from £105 to £119 and 34 averaged more than £96 or £43 above the average last September. Sir Cuthbert Quilter, prasident of the Suffold Horse Society fot 31 years, sold three at an average of £110. The ploughing campaign and the need for economising petrol have caused this brisk demand for horses of the heavy and also for their breeding stock. At Ipswich mares and lil'lics were in request from all over England. A three-year-old filly sold for £152 ss, with an average, for all' ages of £70, an increase of £23 on the last sale.. Stallions averaged £68, an increase of £14, with a top price of £147 for a three-year-old which had just been placed first in his class.

A. Strenuous Pastime. Two local young men spent a recent Sunday bv rowing to Whale Island. They each took a dinghy on the seven mile trip and out of curiosity timed the trip. T'hey state that the outward journey was done in 2 hours, 5 minutes travelling, time and 1 hour 55 minutes on the homeward trip. On the way to the Whale they "both toolc a tally of strokes which they found to be 30' per minute' and thusf on the crossing had to dip the oars 3900 times.
