COUNTY ELECTIONS * Sir,i —The correspondence in regard to the County Council, election has been very interesting if not altogether correct. I did not hear of any- misunderstanding about the Councillors request to Councillor McCulloch. I 1 did hear many ratepayers say they thought the Councillors had taken, a considerable amount on themselves in doing so,and they thought the Council shoufrl be run at full strength, and in Mr McCulloch shovml liiave resigned when his leave of absence expired. All, expressed their admiration of Mr McCulloch, for the part he is playing for the second time in defending the Kmpire. It must also recognised that a man; cannot serve two masters, and with thirteen thousand milles of ocean rolling between the two jobs, one will have to receive no personal attention. As to the Council taking a pride in the running of the Omataroa Riding, sucli a statement must have been given without knowledge ot what is going on in the riding. Do Messrs Sisam and Thomson know a notice board is displayed on the Omataroa Riding threatening dires penalty to any one removing anything from the roadside and that at the other end of the road, the road itself has been partly taken, and impudently fenced off, very much to the detriment. of the. Taneatua settl'ers, this is a matter to be thoroughly ashamed of and the Council are to be asked at an early date to carry out their own instructions in this matter. Mr McCracken's letter made .me smile. Mr McCracken is a very experienced man—surely* he knows good wine needs no bush. To excuse is to accuse,, and that, whiter washing unless done by an expert leaves a very unsatisfactory job. 1 do not think Mr MtCracken wiit ever become an expert white-washer. Yours etc., . 1 SARAH FRANKLAND* Sir* —It was with some amusement I learned of the disinterment of a corpse as an aid to electioneering—■ I refer to the Rural Housing Scheme. Does the elector, who is standing against Councillor Burnett, wish us to understand that he is so little interested in Council affairs, that he does not read reports of the Council meetings or even his local paper.- If my memory serves me aright, there was a report in the BEACON dated 23rd October last, of a Council meeting held the previous day definitely disposing of the above Scheme for good and all. Also a sub-leader by the Editor of the BEACON with a caption ""Exit Rural Housing." In view of this I would earnestly advise any elector, before standing for such an office as councillor, to take an intelligent interest in .the work of thei public body on which he wishes to serve?. Otherwise how can we ratepayers have confidence in him. Yours etc., "AMUSED." Sir, —In your issue of the "Beacon" of Wednesday last,, is a letter written under the caption "In Committee" in which the writer goes to some, length trying to discredit Mr Burnett, County Chairman, in the eyes of the ratepayers generally, and those of Nukuhou in particular. I have no intention of criticising Mr Black's lletter in detail. All t wish to say is- that he has greatly distorted the facts. Hisi object, of course, is apparent to all. Now, Mr Editor, I wish to ask Mr Black a question: Dtoesj he knew of any person in the Whakatane County whose war effort can exceed that of Mr Burnett's ? . I. would like tc point out to the ratepayers of Nukuhou that it would be disastrous io our local war effort if Mr Burnett were removed' from office at the present time, and in conclusion I would like to saythat I consider it would not be m the best interests of our mates nowr lidding the front line. Yours etc., G. HEWITT. Waimana^.
