A THOUGHT FOR MOTHER

MOTHER'S DAY, which falls due on Sunday next, will have a new meaning- and a greater significance in thousands of homes throughout the Dominion. Not since the Great War have the mothers of Empire: been held in the esteem and affection they are to-day, for it is from them in times of war that the greatest sacrifiae is exacted. Thus, on Sunday next Mother's Day will be observed with more tenderness than at any time: since its inception in America, some fifteen years ago. And in passing, who is there, in the midst of these days of strain, trial and worry, would begrudge a passing thought to. the mothers of the world. Has not the thought given birth to a movement which all-embracing, penetrating the barriers of nationalism, of speech and of human diplomacy, all of which appear as shallow despicable things, by comparison. Here is something elevated high above war, conflict and suffering—the simple gesture which tokens a commemoration of human affection to the one who was willing to dare all in order to bring a new life into the world. Not merely this, but more, a hundred times more, for with that act of creation was born the undying mother's' love, that amazing bond which can never die. Years of separation of apathy and disregard, find it still as fresh and as lovely as ever, full of consideration, sympathy and understanding. It is something beyond the comprehension of material things, of the hard-headed processes of every May life,, yet every man and every woman knows in their heart of hearts the vast debt which they owe to their mothers. Thoughts of mother would have prevented wars throughout the ages, would have stayed the hand savagery in invasion, would have curbed the ruthlessness of thts oppressors since the dawn of time. It is a creed which the world has yet to know, but yet it is a creed of which Mother's Day stands out as the first frail pioneer. Only a gesture, yet one which means so much to .iust someone in the lives of every one of us. It is mete therefore that in the welter of madness which is taking place in the world to-day, where mothers and motherhood, the founders and spirit of the homes of mankind are the victims of the killer and the despoiler, that in. spite of our pre-occupation we can still find time to give a thought to the founders of our race. Mother's Day is on Sunday next; while we are blessed with the sunshine of green prosperity in this land of ours let us remember them, every one!
