A DUPLICATION

PAKAAHU HOT SPRINGS

RESERVE

OFFER GOES BEGGING

The recent offer of £100 towards the development of the* P: kaahu Hot Springs as a convalescent home for returned men, by Mr ami Mrs F. Maunder, has' been reluctantly turned down by the County Council after having made an inspection, andi contacted the Government in connection with the matter.

In the works committee report it was stated c A communication has been received that the Government intends to cater for convalescent .soldier patients at Rotorua and Hamner, and, in view this, a diir plication of such facilities would not be entertained by the Government—that the council' has 1 in mind the development of this area but of necessity its programme is deferred until after t'hc war and it is with regret that the council cannot avail itself of the generous offer made.

A Boring Question,

•Ptikaah.il Hot Springs: The writer considers that boring should, be carried) out on the Pukaahu Hot Springs area before any definite plan of future development is, decided upon. The present supply of hot water is not sufficient to cope with anything larger than the existing bathing 'pool.. Boring in selected placcs would determine the possibility of' Augmenting the existing plan.. The existence or otherwise of additional hot water must influence any future plan o,f development at the springs. In the meantime I would suggest that improvements be confined to bsilding a new entrance from the Main Road 1 across, the' recently acquired flat ltand in front of the springs and planting both sides with suitable trees. The new roadway would require to be built up approximately two feet above the existing! level of the land. The coir face could be pumiced, from the near-by pit. In connection with the above it is interesting to note that successful boring operations were carried out at Te Aroha recently where am additional supply of hot mineral water was located which enabled the authorities to extend their bathing facilities and also provide! the tourist grounds with a hot water geyser which plays every ten minutes.
