Mr B. S. Barry, who has been Mayor of Whakatane for the past term, at Monday night'is meeting announced his willingness to again offer his services to the town. "1 enjoy the work, although when taking up the position I did so with some trepidation knowing my ignorance of public body work. However, although I still have a great deal to learn, I feel that this is not the time to give up the tasks we have undertaken and it is my desire to sfcand again." Mr Barry thanked the members for the support they had given him. They had not always agreed on matters before the council, but he had been gratified that on the broader lines off general policy he had had the confidence of the councillors. He felt that it was essential for a Mayor to have this support on the general lines of policy.
Continuing, the Mayor spoke in glowing terms of the: work of the staff, which had been very loyal and energetic. Mr Saunders had been a tower of strength, while Messrs Lysaght and Hendforson had also do no their work thoroughly. A.s a whole the staff had been excellent and the Borough had been fortunate, in this direction. Mr Barry also paid tribute to the press for its co-operation, in the running of the Borough.
His Worship asked all members to offer their services again. They had done a "good job of work," and at present it was necessary tlifit they should continue with their tasks. There was, he said, a dearth of younger men at home at present, and the older ones should continue to look alter things until the younger ones returned, after having completed their bigger job.-
In making these remarks the Mayor Avas replying to Crs. S. S. Shapley, A. J. Canning and) W.■ Sullivan who had paid high tribute to his work during his term, of office. His service had been excellent and they were sure that the ratepayers had been satisfied. The Mayor Avas asked to convey thanks to Mrs Barry and express the Avislf?S of the council to her.
Speakers also spoke highly of the staff, making particular mention of the clerk, Mr D. V. Saunders, who Mr Sullivan stated, saved more than his salary each year by His complete grasp of the job.
With the exception of Councillors G. Otley and A. Hall, members repliqd that they would be willing to offer themselves for re-election.
