COMPULSION URGED
UNION FOR FARMERS
ATTITUDE OF CONFERENCE
Compulsory membership of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was advocated in a resolution adopted at the annual conference of the Wailcato Sub-Provincial in Hamilton. A motion, emanating from remits from the Te Pahu and Te Kowhai branches, was framed urging that the policy of compulsory unionism for farmers be adopted and that dairy companies be requested to urge the Dairy Board to make all dairy farmers financial members of the Farmers' Union-
After a vigorous debate, in which the imperative need for the farmers to be united was stressed, the conference adopted the resolution by 39 votes to 22, Opponents of the motion urged that it could not be made effective as it would require legislation, and, the Government would certainly not bring in legislation which would make the Farmers' Union the most powerful organisation in the Dominion.
