SITTING AT WHAKATANE SEVERAL APPEALS HEARD The District Manpower Committee sat at Whakatane on Wedncs- ■ day when a number of appeals were heard and dealt with. The committee comprised Messrs E. Edwards (chairman), G. Buchanan E. J. Wilton (committeemen) -and A. Ripley (secretary). _ No Great Hardship. Frederick Hugh Wederell appeal■ed on his own behalf stating that =he was a car trimmer carrying on his own business at Whakatane. He had had an apprentice but the young man had left to go into the - army. The appellant continued that work was plentiful at present 'is he conducted the onlv business of its kind in the town and handled -all garages requirements and in addition was getting jobs from Opotiki and Tauranga. When his grading was stated by the secretary ,to be A 1 the appellant stated -since having his army medical animation he had consulted a specialist at Rotorua who claimed that he should be in Class 3 owing to an injured knee. Questions regarding capital in his business and turnover were answeryTeef and Avhen the appellant stated that to do the twelve weeks training would cause undue hardship the committee pointed out that as the business was a one-man one if •an illness was contracted the same ■would apply. The chairman pointed out that the occupation was not a reserved -one and suggested that the hardship would not be undue in the circum- " stances. "The point is that there is a war -on," commented a committeeman, -and if you became ill your business would be neglected to the same - extent. He added that car-trimming was not as important as service to ;, the country and that as there was no opposition in the town then the business of the appellant would not was reserved and in the afternoon announced that the ao- ' peal would be dismissed. The ' ■ chairman pointed out that the apipellant was single and it was not • considered that undue hardship would be caused by twelve weeks The appellant would be .required to go into camp on June 1.
Appeal Withdrawn. The appeal of John Wm, Evans, ra sharemilker employed by Jolmrstone Bros was withdrawn the re\ju "servist stating that he would be free to enter camp on May 1. After investigating the position the witli*drawal of the appeal was approved, "Get it Over." That it w r oukl be better to get 'the training over was stated by Mr A. O. Meredith who was appealing for his son A. O. Meredith,, who added that the twelve weclts absence from the farm would be more ! -suitably timed if the reservist was to be called on May 1. The committee thanked the appellant for his co-operation and -stated .that in the event of his health failing and his son being found indispensable he would be released tfrom camp on application. Father Serving. jE. •• -Expressing willingness to go- ijito camp in May providing he would .'be released if his father, Major Haeusler was called for service during the term. V. A. Haeusler appeared before the committee. He explained that he was managing n sheep farm for his father who was ■ a school teacher, and his mother would be left alone if both his father and he were serving at oric^f The chairman stated that the cojh:mittee was aware of the effort be-
ing made by the family and agreed , that if the Major was called for .gryqamp during the term reservist be •released. Appeals Dismissed. The appeal of Mr Luke for his •employee, A. Watson, was dismiss*ted. reservist to be called on Maj- 1 -and released by July 31. A similar decision was given in the appeal of Mr T. Lamont for H. E. Ashby. The appeal was dismissed so long -as appellant was not called before June 1 in the case of Thomas J. O'Flfcherty for whom Mr R. T. Old- | ('"ing, of Awaroa Station, appealed. li-.' appeal by Mr Andrew Mc--1 ILcan, dairy farmer, for W. W. A.
Johns, was withdrawn and approved reservist to serve from May. 1 to July 31. Mr H. P. Stcfford appealed for his sharemilker Frederick W. Foote and the appeal was adjourned sine die. The secretary of the Rangitaiki Dairy Co. explained that the company had appealed thinking that Edward Raymond Aberhart might be called during the busy season, but had no objection to his now going to camp. Expressing appreciation of the assistance the committee ruled that reservist serve from May 1 to July 31. Ronald Albert Goodwin produced a medical certificate when making his appeal against service, which stated that lie had to undergo a lengthy treatment. Evidence was also given that he was sharcmilking with his brother and assistance was unavailable. The committee adojurncd the appeal sine die in view of the circumstances.
Giving evidence in the appeal of B. F. M. Grace, the father of the reservist, Mr B. F. Grace, stated that he could not work and relied on his s to run his farm and also break another property. The commitx that the reservist enter camp on May 1, but if either of two other sons drawn in the overseas ballot' were called up for service then reservist be released from camp. Stating that his sharemilking contract with Mr L. W. Luxton expired on May 31, R. J. Moore appealed for his employee, E. Atkinson. Mr Moore stated that he had been drawn for overseas service and had been passed as fit. In view of the fact that the reservist could not be spared at present and that lie would be available for training after May it was ruled that he enter camp on June 1.
