SCHOOL SWIMMING BATH

Sir, —I hope the biggest tidal wave in history will have nothing on "the wave of enthusiasm at present sweeping the town" —to quote a phrase in the Beacon's leading article recently on "School Swimming Bath." Let's all be in the swim, Why should the School Committee -and the Chamber of Commerce be the only ones to splasb around in the (at present imagine ery) Whakatane swimming baths ? You say that "the community is becoming swimming bath minded." Well that is one better than having "water on the brain."—or taking it heat, without any water. Speaking dryly and seriously however, if it comes ro raising funds, here is one idea : I once resided in a town not much bigger than Whaknlane where the people had had swimming baths for many years as well as rivers and sea nearby. Well, the school authorities got "swimming bath minded" as you call it, and built a full size bath in the school grounds. They had a fairly live Old Pupils' Association, and old pupils were invited to subscribe £5 5s towards the cost of the baths, this entitling them to life membership of the O.P.A, I "coughed" up my five guineas, so I suppose lots of other non-caledonians did the same in a state of bath-mind-edness (or weak-mindedness). I dare say there are hundreds of ex-pupils of the Whakatane School who would be good for a fiver in the same way. Yours etc., BATH-MINDED.
