LEARN TO SWIM POOL

Sir,—The Whakatane School Committee is to be commended lor ita decision to build a "Learn to Swim" pool handy to the school, and is fortunate in that they will be able to ;«et a subsidy for that, purpose. The value in saving life by teaching all children to swim cannot he overstressed. The only practical solution to New Zealand's population problem at present, is to save its young people, i'rom drowning by teaching them to swim and encouraging them to practice swimming. There will always be drownings, but if we teach children to swim, they will at least have a sporting chance, also a chance to save others from drowning. It is one of the best insurances a child can have. Again looking at it from a health point ot view it is one of the healthiest exercises for children. Now all you nom de plume letter writers, Warning, Ratepayer, Parent, Sense, etc., etc., etc., now is your chance (also "Mother" "who •says if near the school she would heartily support any scheme got up to get it there) to show the courage of your convictions. If you believe the place should lie at the Whakatane School you have a chance to put one there and be proud of youi chance. Of course it must be fresh water, but what of that, it will be Whakatane water. However to show there is no illfeeling or hard feeling, on my side and to give the "nom de plumers" and other critics a lead, I will be pleased and proud, to donate the sum of five pounds (£5) towards the cost of a Learn to Swim pool at the Whakatane School. F. MAHY, Sen. P.S. It would be a good idea fertile BEACON to open a subscription list and I enclose £5.
