PATRIOTIC BENEFIT
GALA DAY RANGITAIKI EVENT Preparations for a record attendance at the Patriotic Gala Day to be held at the Edgccumbe Football Ground next Saturday arc now well in hand. A strong committee of stewards have organised what should be a most enjoyable and profitable day. A working bee has been arranged for Thursday and it is expected that everybody who cart, will join the bee and do his share in making this patriotic venture the success it should be. The Home Guard Platoon Marching display is rapidly gaining in popularity and it now appears that every platoon from Ruatoki to Matata will be represented. From 1 o'clock the skirl of the Pipes will accompany the Highland dancing competitions for which entrants are- expected from Rotorua to challenge the local champions. For the open events, two medals have been presented for competition by Mr D. Radcliffe. Then there is the Pipers' Marching Display. No Scotchman worthy of the name should miss this. For those of avoirdupois there is the tug-o'-war for Home Guardsmen. Te Teko Guardsmen have issued a challenge to all comers. Running commentaries and announcements will be made by an electric broadcasting system. Since the publication of the programme further donations have been made towards prizes by Mr W. S. Syme, £5; Mr and Mrs A. Jamieson, £1 Is; Mr and M,rs A. Hawken, £1; Mr and Mrs J. Crang, 1. The Combined Patriotic Committee appreciate these generous gifts. The enthusiasm already evinced augurs well for a very successful day.
ARRANGEMENTS COMPLETE The proceeds of Ihc Gala Day on April sth (Saturday next) are being divided among the Rangitaiki Patriotic Committees in the proportion of their assessments and it ' therefore bccomes the duty of every patriot to attend or, if unable to attend, to at least buy a ticket. Tickets may be purchased from senior scholars of all the Rangitaiki Schools, viz., Poroporo, Paroa, Thornton, Matata, Matata Convent, Te Telto, A,wakeri, Otakiri and Edgecumbe." The duties of the day are divided among all the Patriotic Committees. For instance the gatekeepers periods of duty are as follows Edgecumbe 9 a.m. to 10 a.m; To Teko 10 a.m. to 11 a.m; Otakiri 11 a.m. to 12 p.m; Thornton 12 p.m. to 1 p.m; Awakeri 1 jj.m. to 2 p.m; Edgecumbe 2 onwards. Stallholders' periods of duty : — Te Teko 9 a.m. to 10 a.m: Edgecumbe 10 a.m. to 11 a.m; Thorn,ton 11 a.m. to 12 p.m; Awakeri 12 p.m. to 1 p.m; Otakiri 1 p.m. to 2 p.m; Edgecumbe 2 p.m. onwards. ON THE LOCAL GREENS SATURDAY'S PLAY Games played on the local green on Saturday proved very enjoyable the results being as follows Donaldson, Bigelow, Redpath and Loane 2fi v Otley, Pearson, Berg and Chamberlain 18. Murphy, Bell, Marsh and King 23 v Smith, Drube, Luxton and Comer 21. Sliapley, Salmon, Frances and Norriss 21 v Johnson, Bullard, Mctsaac and Shaw 13, Henderson, White, Healy and Chalmers 27 v Boon, Bridger, Bell and Hcllis 20.
TENNIS WAIMANA DEFEATS OHOPE The Waimana Club, team visited Ohope on Saturday and after an enjoyable day's play defeated the home club by 13 sets to 11.
