BOROUGH SILVER JUBILEE

Sir, —Next year—l942—will see the Whakatane Borough's 25th year. We all hope there will he peace ion earth and Hitler and Co. in piedes by then. In any case it is not too early for the BEACON to start advocating a big celebration of the Borough's Silver Jubilee. Can you tell me, Mr Editor, if the Borough Council is so fortunate as to possess a municipal coat of arms and motto, and also a mayoral chain of office. If not, why not ? A borough jubilee would be a suitable time to get such useful and ornamental things into working order. I read recently that the Newmarket Borough Council, which built the Olympic swimming pool at great cost, went to the extent of adopting an engraving of its swimming baths on the new coat of arms. Well we in Whakatane have not yet a swimming bath to do likewise with, but here's hoping we may some day . Still we have a Rock that is only throw from the Municipal Chambers, so let's have it as a coat of arms (with embellishments). And if a municipal motto is wanted, what about "Rock a bye Baby" or "Stoney-broke Are We." INQUIRER. The Borough Council already possesses handsome mayoral chains, and also an attractive coat of arms which appears on all stationery. The coat of arms has for its centrepiece a reproduction of The Rock and depicts the arrival of the Ma-> tatua canoe. The motto adopted by the Borough is "Ka Whakatane i au" the meaning of which is "I will act the man." However, your suggestions regarding the jubilee are timely and will he kept in mind. — Ed. BEACON.
