BIGGEST SINCE 1901
AGGREGATION OF HORSES TROOPERS AT BURNHAM The largest aggregation of horses of military standard in the South Island since the visit of the late King George V., as Duke of Cornwall and York, in 1901, has been made at Burnham for the training of the 3rd Mounted Rifle Brigade. The number of horses in the lines reaches 980. They have come from all rural districts. That the military authorities have been able to.secure
so many mounts offers a striking challenge to the contention that the day of the horse is over.
For short distances over country, where normal communications are likely to be interfered with in the event of an emergency, the horse, the authorities hold, is able to give more rapid and mobile contact betAveen units than vehicles, specially when horses are ridden by the many experienced horsemen and amateur riders avlio are attached to the brigade.
