PROGRAMME AT EDGECUMBE combined patriotic organisations The Executive elected by the five Patriotic Committees of the Rangitaiki Plains have decided to hold their Gala Day on Saturday, April 5 in the Edgecumbe Football ground opposite the Raiigitaiki Plains Dairy Factory. The ground was placed at the disposal of the committee through the kindness of Mr Olding. A varied programme packed with novelty events has been drawn up and in a few days posters should be exhibited in every centre. Flat races and relay races for all ages and sexes are arranged. Home Guard Events. All Home Guardsmen should have an interesting day. There is their tug-o'-war for teams of eight (seven plus a captain) for a pound note, and to prove their military bearing, there is the March Past by all Platoons entering. This event should prove a very useful rehearsal for the Inspection Parade to be held on the -'following day at Awakeri. A prize of £2 2s for the winning team has been donated by Mir lan Gow. Novelty Competitions. Much merriment should attend such events as the following :—■ Treacle bun competition; Tossing the sheaf; Bobbing apple competition; Lazy stick; Pillow fight on pole; Catching greasy pig; Climbing the greasy pole; Bombing Adolf, Hermann and Benito. rM ' the day such competitions as the following will be organised:— Nail driving; Putting the shot; stepping the chain; Clay a>uu. ing' (organised by the Te Puke G . Club) and Weight guessing for a lamb donated by Mr S. Sinclair, ami a pig donated by Mr J. Revell. Highland Dancing Martial. At 1 p.m. the airs of the Pipes should be heard accompanying the rhythm of the 'Hielan' lassies while they Fling and exhibit the dainty steps of the Sword Dance. The competitors in the open events in both these classes will compete for silver medals presented by Mr D. Radcliffe. Several prizes have already been donated. Besides the ones already enumerated, awards have been kindly forthcoming from Messrs C. Hyland and C. McDonald. Arrangements have been made for the use of an electric sound system for broadcasting. Hot tea and refreshments will be obtainable on the grounds. A dance, arrangements for which are in the capable hands of Messrs T. Boil and C. McDonald, will conclude n further Patriotic effort on the part of the Rangitaiki people.
