First Offender. A first offender for drunkenness appeared before Mr G. R. Kent, J.P., at the local Court on Monday morning and bail cf 10s was estreated. Taneatua Hall. The seats in the Taneatua Hall are to be re-padded to the extent of £50 of which half shares will be paid by the County Council and Mr H. E. Bell. Ragwort Eradication. The County Council's ragwort control programme for the year has now concluded and over the past twelve months 5613 acres of land have been treated. This work hasi been done at a cost of £2253 7s 6d and has been applied to Grown and Unindividualised Native Lands. Raising of Pig Levy. A resolution recommending the doubling of the present levy on pigs was carried at a meeting of the Waikato Pig Council on Thursday night. It was emphasised at the meeting that the work of pig councils would become even more important in the face of the difficulties caused by thf; war, and that it would be essential for the future welfare of the industry for the councils to continue their work. Concern about Abattoir. Concern was expressed at tljle monthly meeting of the OpoitfiKuf Labour Party held on Thursday night at the prospect of the Opotiki Bacon Company having to. move to Whakatane on account of the necessity of an abattoir being established in Opotiki. A resolution was passed to the effect that a petition be presented to the borough council asking it to seriously consider establishing an abattoir district in Opotiki .
County Finance. At yesterday's meeting of the County Council accounts totalling £5328 4s 8d were passed for payment. Road Under Flood Level. A survey of Station Road is to be put in hand shortly according to the county engineer's report at yesterday's meeting of the council, for the purpose of raising of the highway, above the flood level. Centennial Memorial. Mr C. G. Lucas, County Clerk, reported yesterday that the cost of the Ohope Centennial Memorial including the small area of land taken as a dam site was £747 lis 2d. Of this £141 18s lOd had been recovered and a claim for the final recovery of £44 18s lid Avas forwarded to the authorities on the 10th March. Traffic Control a la Mode. Minus a very essential garment a three year old Maori urchin entertained people on the Strand yesterday, by directing the traffic from the top of the 'dummy policeman* at the main intersection. Quite oblivious to the diversion which was created by its behaviour, the tfot carried on in a most confident manner with cars and lorries swerving past, until finally rescued by a very worried Pakeha onlooker.
