LOCAL BODIES' PICNIC

* DAY AT WHALE ISLAND POPULAR ANNUAL EVENT Instituted by the Harbour Board with a view to bringing the members of various local bodies of the district into closer contact, and creating a more complete understanding the Local Bodies' picnic has now taken its place amongst the popular annual events in Whakatane. The first of these outings took place last year and proved so enjoyable that all were keen to again attend with the result that the Harbour Board, County Council, Borough Council, Power Board. P.W.D. and Hospital Board were nil represented on Wednesday when u visit was paid to Whale Island, On the Harbour Board's launch the party left in the morning in excellent weather, on reaching the Island some members landing to spend a restful day ashore while ! others remained on board and passed the day fishing. The launch re- ] turned to the Island so that all could join in lunch, which was supplied by the Harbour Board, and > again departed for the fishing grounds. Afternoon tea was simil- • arly enjoyed after which the return, 'ourney was undertaken.
